Yes, I AM still alive...

Hey guys!

So sorry to those of you who keep asking me why i've abandoned my blog! Well I haven't, not really. I guess I was just forced to take a break from it because I sprained my ankle in my volleyball class and haven't been able to drive to abuse Panera's internet anymore! But it gave me a lot of time to work on editing the video I made for my New York trip! Sooo to make matters complicated i've uploaded the last part first onto youtube, so here's the link! Hope you guys enjoy it, and i'll try to upload the other two parts as soon as I can!

The City That Never Sleeps!

Big. Noisy. Crowded. Incredible! These are just some of the words I can think of to describe New York City, which is where I spent last weekend! My cousin has lived there for a while, and a school friend coincidentally moved a few blocks away from her this summer, so it worked out perfectly! I left early on Friday morning (missing a day of college, hehehe…) and ended up wasting most of the day travelling because of the time change and the distance between both houses and both airports!
Anyway, you know how there’s always that scene in movies showing a girl carrying a lot of luggage, running frantically to catch a bus while dodging honking cars and looking very lost in a foreign place? Well it actually WAS like that when I first arrived, and it was awesome! After I dropped my luggage off at Mathilde’s house, she took me on a tour of Brooklyn before we met up with Anna for supper. After a very late night, the next day was spent running around Manhattan in an effort to see as much as we could in very little time! I don’t think I’ve ever walked that much (or eaten that much chocolate) in my life! We took a short break to recover before bundling up and exploring Times Square at night, which, by the way, is EXACTLY as it’s advertised! No disappointments there! I had my camera in my hand the entire time, filming as much as I could (which I plan to edit into a short movie and post on here), and just drinking it all in!
Sunday was spent running around Brooklyn and Chelsea with a suitcase and a time restriction before I had to head back to the airport! But I have to hand it to Anna; she really managed to squeeze in a lot, showing me her work area, the statue of liberty, an incredible view of the city, a famous market and most importantly, her favourite cupcake shop!
It was all almost too good to be true, because as soon as I got to the airport I found out my flight back home had been delayed for three hours. The reason I was annoyed wasn’t because I would most likely miss the last bus to Rockford and have to spend the night in the airport, the REASON I was annoyed is coz I was stuck in the AIRPORT while I was in NEW YORK when I could have used those precious hours to explore! But there I sat, making a lot of frantic phone calls to figure out a plan B (which included running to catch the last shuttle and having Grandma pick me up at the station at 1:00am! )
On a lighter note, it really was an incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and the reason I know it was a success is because my feet hurt and I was EXHAUSTED by the end (which, for those of you that know me well, does NOT happen very often!) So thanks to Anna and Mathilde for being awesome tour guides and making my short time there unforgettable!

Not your typical Sunday afternoon!

I’ve only been living here a few weeks but Grandma had to call the fire department because I burned the house down! Ok fine, I’m exaggerating… but we DID have about five fully-outfitted firemen traipsing around her backyard last Sunday! It all started when she mildly suspected a gas leak in the outlet outside that connects to the grill. After a few minutes of hesitation she looked at me with a twinkle in her eye and asked, “Are you up for some excitement?” Well I wasn’t going to pass THAT opportunity up, so a few minutes after she made the call we were both trying to control our giggles as the huge engine pulled up after awakening Rockford with it’s obnoxious siren. They fully-equipped, über-serious firemen paced around, prodded a few pipes and took a quick tour of the basement before deciding the old lady must have been imagining things. So, in conclusion, Grandma summoned them up before they left and said, “You might think I’m crazy, although you probably already do, but could I get a picture of you with my granddaughter?” So here it is!

Labor Day weekend in Wisconsin!

If someone had told me a few years back that someday I would be able to hop in the car and visit my cousin’s family for a long weekend I would’ve just rolled my eyes. But since I’ve been here, dreams have been coming true all over the place, and our Labor Day weekend in Wisconsin was no exception! It was surreal to be there at a time that wasn’t the Summer Holidays, because that’s the only time slot in which our family ever visited, but there I was, spending a few wonderful days with my aunt, uncle and cousin Christine and, of course, their incredible pool! ;) The weather didn’t quite play along but that didn’t stop us from swimming (and then speeding over to the hot tub for recovery!) It was a really magical time, and the best part was that when we said goodbye, it wasn’t as tearful as it usually is, coz we’ll be seeing each other pretty soon anyway!

In the pool with Christine :)

The fortune I found in my cookie the day my family left... Perfect!

Hello world! It's Melanie here!

The thing is, there are just so many things happening in my life right now, along with so many people that I want to share them all with, that I have decided to start a blog to help me keep in touch with my family and friends scattered around the globe, and update them on my whereabouts and ‘what-i-am-up-to’s’! I really enjoy writing, especially when it’s on my own terms and NOT in the form of essays or assignments, so I’m really looking forward to this! I basically plan to use this site to post pictures and experiences of my time in the USA and other travelling I have done or will do! So if you’re interested in following an eighteen-year-old girl’s journey across the globe, stick with me! SOO I guess this is where the boring introduction ends, and the fun begins! Enjoy!
